Persepolis

This afternoon we went to see the French/Iranian movie Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Parannaud. Based on Satrapi's graphic novel of the same name, it is deeply moving, sad, funny, quirky and beautifully animated - definitely one of my absolute favourites for this year.

I heard that Iggy Pop and Sean Penn were both cast for the English version, but I would definitely recommend the original French movie (for which Catherine Deneuve voices one of the main characters). Click here to view the trailer.

Post script: When I saw the movie I didn't realised it was traditionally animated (i.e.: by hand, rather than by computer). Now I'm doubly impressed!

Click here, here, here, and here for a peep at the animation process.

Ohmygodohmygodohmygod!!!!!! I absolutely LOVE this movie!!!! I was fortunate enough to see it when I was in Paris last summer, and then again this past winter when it premiered here in Boston... I then purchased the comic (I wish I had read that first)...
You will be happy to know that, at least at my Boston theatre (not MY theatre, specifically, but...), the film was in French with English subtitles. No Sean Penn. No Iggy Pop. As cool as that may have been, I was VERY relieved to hear the original.
:)
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!!!! :)
Isn't she the cutest little girl?? I love when she does the karate moves... :)

Hey Leslie,

I think you and I have similar taste in a lot of things! Glad to find someone else who loves this movie (even though I have been a little slow on the uptake ...)

I thought Marjane was the sweeted little girl, and I loved her grandmother too.

Hi Juddie,

Thanks for remining me of this gorgeous film! It's on at the Astor in a couple of weeks, so it's in the diary and I am definitely going.

I really enjoy having a peek at your blog! Hope you are well,
