Well, we hoped for rain

We've had about 11 years of drought, and just a few days ago I was lamenting the dryness of our garden's soil ....

But this weekend Melbourne got a taste of the weather that has been ravaging towns up north.

To say that we got a bit wet is an understatement. In less than 30 minutes, the weather changed from being hot and sunny with a cloudless sky to a crazy hailstorm, flooding the city centre and causing extensive damage.

 

  

  

  

  

We stayed inside and watched from the safety of our little house, but I feel sorry for all the birds and animals that were caught in the storm. Imagine being bopped on the head by these!:

 

  

  

 

 

 

  

Note: it never snows in Melbourne. This is the hail that fell when the temperature dropped suddenly from a balmy 26°C (97°F), on a bright and sunny day in the first week of autumn.

Somewhere ....

I've been so happy about the rain that's fallen in Melbourne over the last week or so, but water tanks won't be installed at our new house till next month ..... bad timing eh?!


We got the keys to the house yesterday and are now working to fix up some of its little quirks before we move in a couple of weeks. It's fun to have a new project!

Raindancer

To whoever did a rain dance this week: thank you!
We've only had a couple of light showers so far, but it's lovely to feel a cool breeze and see the glimmer of puddles.

Please don't stop dancing....

Fire and rain

It's so hard to imagine that while much of Victoria has been razed to the ground by fire this week, 60% of Queensland lies underwater due to massive flooding. Apparently residents of many Queensland communities have now been advised to beware of crocodiles swimming in urban areas (!).



Looks as though eastern Australia is copping some rather bad karma this year ...

Sunshower

For a few minutes yesterday it rained.


I lay on my bed and listened to the drumming of fat, heavy raindrops on the roof....

Melbourne monsoon

Today was hot and muggy. Storm clouds gathered at around 4pm and suddenly huge fat drops rained down, eventually turning into large hailstones. Within a few minutes the edges of the roads were flooded, the stormwater drains overflowing, and then, just as suddenly as it started, everything stopped.

I went outside and was surprised to find the weather still stiflingly hot as the dark, glowering storm clouds moved off to the east. It felt a little like Asian monsoon weather.
